Closing Ceremony of the Heavy Equipment Competency Program for Vocational Teachers Held at SMKN 1 Ngawen by DTM SV UGM

Ngawen, 18 September 2025 — The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vocational College Universitas Gadjah Mada, officially concluded its community service program titled “Enhancing Competence of Vocational School Teachers in Heavy Equipment”, which had been carried out since 18 August 2025. The closing event was held at SMKN 1 Ngawen, Gunungkidul, and was attended by lecturers from DTM SV UGM, industry representatives, and participating teachers from partner vocational schools.

This initiative was part of DTM SV UGM’s commitment to strengthening vocational education through collaborative efforts involving academia, industry, and vocational schools. Throughout the month-long program, participants received both technical and managerial capacity-building training related to heavy equipment technology. The closing ceremony began with remarks by the Principal of SMKN 1 Ngawen, who expressed his appreciation for UGM’s contribution to enhancing vocational educators’ competence. The following speech was delivered by Dr. Ir. Sugiyanto, Head of the Applied Bachelor Program in Heavy Equipment Maintenance and Management Engineering, who re-emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in preparing educators to keep pace with industrial advancements.

The ceremony continued with a training session on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Risk Management, led by Ir. Felixtianus Eko Wismo Winarto, M.Sc., Ph.D. and Dr. Nyayu Aisyah. The material covered key aspects of workplace safety, hazard identification in workshops, and the implementation of a safety culture through the 5S method. This was followed by a session delivered by Mr. Josua from PT United Tractors Semarang Branch, discussing environmental pollution control in the heavy equipment sector. He highlighted the significance of balancing productivity with environmental accountability.

The event concluded with documentation and a closing statement by the organizing committee. In addition to technical enrichment, the program fostered multi-institutional collaboration, with support from partner schools in the form of facilities and transportation for participants.

This initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4: Quality Education, through the enhancement of vocational teaching capacity, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by integrating industrial technology into educational practices, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through sustained cooperation between universities, industry, and vocational schools.
