Strengthening Innovation-Based Creative Learning, DTM SV UGM and GMSI The University of Tokyo Deepen Academic Collaboration

TOKYO – In a continuous effort to respond to the challenges of modern engineering and vocational higher education, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Vocational College, Universitas Gadjah Mada (DTM SV UGM) continues to expand its international network. On Tuesday (6/10/2026), a DTM SV UGM delegation represented by Dr. Eng. Ir. Agustinus Winarno, S.T., M.Eng. conducted a strategic visit and discussion with Prof. Yasuyuki Yokono from the Graduate Program for Social Design Innovation (GMSI), The University of Tokyo, Japan.

This strategic meeting focused on strengthening inter-institutional synergy in developing creative learning models. The collaboration is built upon a solid track record of partnership between UGM and The University of Tokyo. Previously, in 2023, both institutions successfully organized an International Workshop in Indonesia designed to transform technological and social issues into innovative technical solutions. The event was co-initiated by Prof. Yasuyuki Yokono and Dr. Eng. Ir. Agustinus Winarno, S.T., M.Eng., who is also an alumnus of the GMSI program at The University of Tokyo.

The success of the workshop was later adapted and modified into the UGM FabCamp Challenge, an innovation platform based on Project-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with the Fab Lab ecosystem. This pioneering program at UGM was initiated by DTM SV UGM lecturers, Dr. Eng. Ir. Agustinus Winarno, S.T., M.Eng. and Dr. Ir. Setyawan Bekti Wibowo, S.T., M.Eng., IPM., ASEAN Eng. This practical engineering initiative then grew significantly and was successfully elevated to the Asian regional level through the Fablab Asian Network (FAN), supervised by Dr. Eng. Ir. Yosephus Ardean Kurnianto Prayitno, S.T., M.Eng., IPM.

Building upon the achievements of previous programs, the recent discussion in Tokyo reaffirmed the commitment of DTM SV UGM and GMSI The University of Tokyo to advance to a more structured collaboration. Moving forward, both institutions are designing opportunities to re-host the international workshop and FabCamp Challenge with the active participation of GMSI. Additionally, both parties agreed to facilitate spaces for exchanging best practices through academic seminars to solve current global engineering education challenges.

Concrete Support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This partnership and educational innovation initiative between SV UGM and The University of Tokyo directly aligns with the achievement of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): Realized by promoting Project-Based Learning (PBL) and creative learning models to produce vocational graduates who are adaptive to technological advancements.
  • SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Achieved by facilitating the creation of innovative, appropriate technology-based solutions through the utilization of the Fab Lab ecosystem.
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Strengthening cross-border academic collaboration between DTM SV UGM and one of the world’s leading universities in Japan.

This strategic visit further proves the commitment of DTM SV UGM to continuously position itself as a center of excellence in vocational engineering education that is adaptive, innovative, and relevant to the times. Recognizing that the best innovations are born from collaboration, DTM SV UGM consistently welcomes sustainable synergy with various academic institutions and industry partners on both national and international stages. Together, let us create an educational ecosystem capable of producing outstanding engineers and making a real impact on the global community.
