Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Five students from the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM), accompanied by two supervising lecturers, participated in the SEMI TECH Zoomers Bootcamp – ASEM organized by SEMICON Southeast Asia from May 4–7, 2026, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Malaysia. The program was designed to introduce university students to the international semiconductor industry and enhance their understanding of technological advancements and modern manufacturing practices.
One of the participants was Mustafa Akmal Fakhrizal, a 2022 student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vocational College UGM. The program brought together students from various universities, particularly across Southeast Asia, and featured leading semiconductor manufacturing companies such as Tokyo Electron (TEL), Infineon Technologies, Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company (SSMC), Micron Technology, and several other industry players.
Throughout the program, participants had the opportunity to attend industry seminars, introductory sessions on semiconductor technologies, discussions with industry professionals, innovation competitions focused on semiconductor manufacturing, and company exhibitions showcasing the latest technological developments and innovations in the semiconductor sector. In addition, the event served as a valuable networking platform connecting students, academics, and industry representatives from various countries.
The participation of SV UGM students in this program was particularly important, as the semiconductor industry is one of the fastest-growing strategic sectors and plays a significant role in global technological transformation. Through this experience, students gained insights into future workforce competencies, advancements in modern manufacturing technologies, and international career and collaboration opportunities within high-technology industries.
The SEMI Tech Zoomers program was conducted through a series of interactive learning activities that combined theoretical knowledge with practical industrial exposure. Participants not only received insights from industry professionals but also actively engaged in discussions, competitions, and explorations of company exhibition areas. Through these experiences, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the real-world implementation of semiconductor technologies in modern industrial environments.
After completing the bootcamp program, the participants also visited the EMAST Laboratory, Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This visit aimed to strengthen research relations and academic collaboration with international partners that have been established, particularly through the collaborative network developed by one of DTM’s faculty members, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Irfan Bahiuddin, S.T., M.Phil., Ph.D.
This activity also supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through increased access to global industry-based learning opportunities, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth through the enhancement of students’ technological competencies, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through exposure to innovation and advancements in the modern semiconductor industry.
