DTM SV UGM Initiates Community Engagement Collaboration with Kaliagung Village Youth through Tent Fabrication Training Program

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vocational College, Universitas Gadjah Mada (DTM SV UGM), held an initial coordination meeting with the Youth Pioneer Group of Kaliagung Village, Sentolo Subdistrict, Kulon Progo Regency. The meeting served as the starting point of a community engagement program in 2025, focusing on welding training and fabrication of a portable event tent.

The program is led by Dr. Bambang Hari Priyambodo, along with a team of lecturers and Mechanical Engineering students, supported by local government representatives and youth communities. The discussion took place at the Field Research Center (FRC), Vocational College UGM, Kulon Progo.

This initiative emerged from the community’s need for event tents to support local cultural and social activities. Currently, the village frequently hosts community events, yet lacks independent facilities for tents. Through this collaboration, local youth will receive structured technical training, including material cutting, SMAW 5G welding, and tent assembly suitable for community use or commercial rental.

During the meeting, both parties agreed on activity procedures, roles, and scheduling for the upcoming implementation phase. Beyond skill development, the program aims to empower local youth to build entrepreneurship capacity and generate economic value for the village.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a cooperation commitment between DTM SV UGM and the Youth Pioneer Group as a formal agreement to proceed with this program throughout 2025.

This activity represents UGM’s commitment to fulfilling its community service mandate by applying practical engineering knowledge to support local development.

Relation to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
The program contributes to:

  • SDG 4 Quality Education, through practical skills training,
  • SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, by creating entrepreneurship opportunities,
  • SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through implementation of small-scale manufacturing technology,
  • SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between higher education and local communities.
